Avocado is a nutrition and meal-tracking app made by Dariusz Niklewicz. This policy explains what information the app processes, why it is used, and the choices available to you.
Information stored by the app
Avocado stores the information you enter, including your profile and nutrition goals, products, recipes, meals, measurements, and Circle membership. This data is stored on your device. When iCloud sync is enabled, Apple CloudKit stores a copy in your private iCloud database. If you share a Circle, the Circle data and participant identity needed for collaboration are shared with the people you invite through Apple CloudKit.
Health data
With your permission, Avocado reads step count, active and resting energy, workouts, biological sex, date of birth, height, and body mass from Apple Health. It can write dietary protein, carbohydrate, and fat samples. Health access is optional and can be changed in the Health app. Health data is used on-device for nutrition targets and summaries; Avocado does not use it for advertising or sell it.
Account and subscription information
An Avocado account is required for AI features. Sign in with Apple is handled through Amazon Cognito. The service stores your Cognito account identifier, limited account status, subscription product and entitlement state, App Store transaction identifiers, and daily AI usage metadata. Apple processes purchases and billing. Avocado does not receive your payment-card details. Eligible subscriptions may be shared through Apple Family Sharing.
AI features
When you choose an AI feature, the text, nutrition details, barcode information, or meal and label photos required to complete that request are sent through Avocado's backend to OpenAI. Avocado's operational logs contain metadata such as account identifier, endpoint, status, latency, request-size bucket, model, token totals, and estimated cost—not the request prompt, meal or label content, or photos. Do not submit information you do not want processed for the requested AI task.
Why information is processed
- To provide local nutrition tracking, sync, backup, and Circle sharing.
- To authenticate AI access, verify App Store entitlements, prevent misuse, and enforce fair-use limits.
- To deliver the AI result you explicitly request and diagnose service failures using metadata-only logs.
Service providers and disclosure
Avocado relies on Apple for iCloud, HealthKit, Sign in with Apple, App Store purchases, and Family Sharing; Amazon Web Services for Cognito, API hosting, and service data; and OpenAI for requested AI processing. Information is disclosed only as needed to provide these functions, comply with law, or protect the service. Avocado does not sell personal information and does not use third-party advertising trackers.
Website hosting
The Avo website is hosted by Cloudflare Pages. Cloudflare processes essential request metadata, such as IP address, browser information, requested URL, and request time, to deliver and secure the website. Avo does not use website analytics, advertising trackers, or cookies.
Your manual language choice is saved only in this browser’s local storage so the website can remember it. You can change it using the language picker or clear it by removing this website’s stored data.
Retention and deletion
On-device and iCloud app data remains until you delete it in Avocado, remove the app's iCloud data, or delete it through Apple controls. Backend account, entitlement-linking, and usage records are retained while your AI account is active and removed when you use Settings → AI & Account → Delete Avocado Account, except records that must be kept for security, fraud prevention, or legal compliance.
Deleting the Avocado AI account does not delete your local or iCloud nutrition data, cancel an App Store subscription, or automatically revoke Sign in with Apple. Subscriptions are managed in your Apple Account. You can revoke Avocado under your Apple Account's Sign in with Apple settings.
Your choices
You can use core nutrition tracking without an AI account, decline Health access, stop iCloud sync or Circle sharing through Apple controls, restore or manage subscriptions in the App Store, and delete your AI account in the app. Requests about your backend account or this policy can be sent to the address below.
Children and changes
Avocado is not directed to children under 13. If this policy changes materially, the effective date above will be updated and notice will be provided where required.
